Classes at the Carrboro ArtsCenter
I regularly offer classes in fiction, memoir, and live storytelling at the Carrboro ArtsCenter. All classes will be announced in my newsletter.
Free live storytelling class for underrepresented voices
Funded by a grant from the Orange County Arts Commission, a free live storytelling class that centers underrepresented voices, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled folks, immigrants, refugees, and anyone else whose voice has been suppressed. Participants will not be required to tell an identity-based story.
In this class, we’ll explore the art and joy of live storytelling (think The Moth or The Monti). We’ll mine our memory and experiences for true stories to share and learn techniques to make them entertaining and meaningful. We’ll get comfortable telling stories in a group setting, make new friends, and hear some amazing stories. This class is for anyone who has a story to tell, wants to feel more comfortable in their body, and is ready to use their voice (or wants to be ready!). It's appropriate for all levels of storytelling experience, with beginners especially welcomed.
Location: The ArtsCenter, 400 Roberson St, Carrboro, NC 27510
Thursdays, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, from 4/18/2024 until 5/23/2024

Workshops
I lead ongoing writing groups where members submit their work for thoughtful, supportive critique. These workshops are designed for those who want to establish or sustain a deep engagement with their writing; many students are working on book-length projects, though that is not a requirement. My workshops include regular discussion of craft. I aim to teach writers skills and techniques that will empower them to most effectively and authentically express themselves on the page, and create an environment of trust and mutual support essential for writers.
Some groups meet biweekly, others monthly. Each workshop is two hours and includes a detailed discussion of submissions (which are sent a week in advance) as well as general check-ins on writing progress and struggles. If you are interested in joining, please contact me and tell me about your writing and how you think a group might support your work.
One Day Writing Retreat
The One Day Writing Retreat is an invaluable respite from our hectic daily lives, giving us space and time to dive into our writing projects, talk craft, and connect with other writers. This gathering provides a relaxing, intimate atmosphere that will nourish your work and rekindle your enthusiasm for writing. Scholarships available.
The date of the next One Day Writing Retreat will be announced in my newsletter.
